Tail-End Charlie is published at last in the Netherlands. It is published by Biblion www.nbdbiblion.nl and translated by Karin Benekin Kolmer. If you can give it a mention in your newsletter that would be much appreciated. 

It would be fantastic if the air museum knew about it and could stock it in their shop. 

The recent Dispersals e-letter showed some new film footage via you tube (the Bodenplatte raid) and among the footage I found a few seconds of my father and 'Paddy' on camera... Quite a find for me.

Toen Mick Manning klein was luisterde hij naar de huiveringwekkende verhalen van zijn vader over zijn leven als boordschutter bij de Britse luchtmacht tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Nu, jaren later, blaast Mick de verhalen opnieuw leven in.

Het is alsof zijn vader de verhalen weer vertelt, in zijn eigen woorden. In samenwerking met Britta maakte Mick ook de illustraties. Voor Charlies kleinkinderen – en voor iedereen.

Mick en Brita schrijven al 15 jaar samen kinderboeken, waarvoor ze al diverse prijzen en nominaties ontvingen. Ze wonnen bijvoorbeeld al 3 keer de English Association Award.

Nieuwsbrief 47 - Augustus 2011 Recente artikels Vrienden van de luchtvaart, zes jaar geleden keurden de toenmalige defensieminister André Flahaut en minister van financiën Didier Reynders de renovatie van de zuidgevel van de grote luchtvaarthal van het Koninklijk Museum van het Leger en de Krijgsgeschiedenis in Brussel goed. De Regie der Gebouwen heeft aan hoofdaannemer Monument Vandekerckhove NV de opdracht toegekend om die voorgevel grondig te renoveren.  De werken zijn gestart in 2009 en in oktober 2011 zou de eerste fase moeten afgewerkt zijn.  Er wordt puik werk geleverd, dat is zeker. Binnen in het museum hadden we minder reden tot juichen. We vroegen ons af of er een garantie is dat ook de rest van het absoluut noodzakelijke renovatiewerk, binnen afzienbare tijd grondig zal worden aangepakt. De Regie der Gebouwen liet nog verschillende dringende werken uitvoeren, zoals de vernieuwing van de zink en het daaronder aanbrengen van isolatie. Een structurele aanpassing van de volledige museumruimte lijkt ons echter verder weg dan ooit. Maar liefst tien jaar geleden vonden de eerste gesprekken plaats tussen de museumdirectie en de Regie der Gebouwen. Hadden we niet opgevangen dat de bezoekers in 2008, bij de herdenking van de 100ste verjaardag van de eerste gemotoriseerde vlucht van de Caters, een totaal vernieuwd museum zouden kunnen betreden? In de luchtvaarthal werd twee jaar de vochtigheid geregistreerd, deze piekte soms tot 90% (binnenhuis in een woonkamer bedraagt deze ongeveer 50%.) Enkele jaren geleden werd hier een project goedgekeurd om vloerverwarming te installeren. Die zou zelfs tijdens zware vrieskou kunnen zorgen voor een constante temperatuur van 16°C, ideaal voor een museum. Vliegtuigen zouden moeten verplaatst worden om ongestoord te verbouwen. We zien te weinig bewegen. Ook bij de Regie der Gebouwen zitten mensen die dit museum willen steunen. Ze zijn ervan overtuigd dat het museum een belangrijke toeristische troef kan worden. De kunst bestaat er natuurlijk in om de geklasseerde luchtvaarthal perfect te restaureren en toch de eigenheid te bewaren. Met de inbreng van geavanceerde tentoonstellingstechnieken moet de hal aangepast worden aan de noden van een hedendaags museum. Die moeilijke symbiose lijkt zelfs op de tekentafel nog niet tot stand te zijn gekomen. Dat is niet alleen het werk van de Regie der Gebouwen. Vooraleer met de volledige renovatie kan gestart worden is er een duidelijke visie nodig voor de toekomst van het museum en daar lijkt het schoentje nog te knellen. Hebben de experts in museumkunde of scenografie al een glasheldere visie voor de komende decennia gedefinieerd? Ervaring leert dat de bouwheren zich daaraan willen aanpassen. Lokale luchtvaartmusea zijn zeer nuttig en moeten gesteund worden, maar ze vormen geen alternatief voor een wetenschappelijke federale collectie, beiden werken complementair. Hangar Flying werpt zeker geen steen naar de professionals van het Koninklijk Museum van het Leger en de Krijgsgeschiedenis of de Regie der Gebouwen, noch naar de AELR en de talrijke vrijwilligers die er schitterend werk verrichten. Samen met de bezoekers hebben ze ontegensprekelijk recht op een eigentijdse museuminfrastructuur. In ieder geval moeten de gesprekken tussen de verschillende partijen terug worden opgestart. Een andere optie is er niet. Waar hebben we dat nog gehoord? Guido schreef een luchtig cursiefje over de nationale defilé, Jean-Pierre brengt daarover een impressie. De surrealistische Hemelvogel van Magritte is het onderwerp van een artikel van Guido. Giovanni bewonderde de splinternieuwe tripple seven van TNT. Kijk naar de foto's van zijn impressie en je ruikt a.h.w. het nieuwe interieur. De luchtvaart zoekt intens naar milieuvriendelijke krachtbronnen. Olivier Ronveaux, ondermeer bekend om zijn raids met ULM's, praatte met Guy over zijn elektrisch aangedreven Yuneec  E430.  Frans en Paul gingen op bezoek bij een lezer die reageerde op de artikels over het monument voor de Sabena DC-6 nabij Rieti. Op Kiewit hadden ze daarna een afspraak met Ken Evens, een mindervalide zweefvliegpiloot die veel lof had voor het Belgian Handflight Fund. In een impressie kan U lezen dat Jean-Pierre genoot van de sympathieke Tailwheel Meet in Overboelaere. Hij was ook aanwezig bij de voorstelling van het boek 'Ou la passion du vol et de l'aventure' van Lt Gen Vl (or) Michel Mandl. Het boek is een ode aan oudgedienden van de luchtmacht die met een Marchetti SF.260 omkwamen in Irak. Hangar Flying. Video B-25 Mitchell in Melsbroek, Bodenplatte including scenes in Belgium

From end 1944, the B-25 Mitchells squadrons of the Royal Air Force were base in Melsbroek near Brussels. In December, the Mitchells executed interdiction missions on targets in Germany in support of the counter offensive during the Battle of the Bulge. On January 1st 1945, Melsbroek and other Allied airfields in Netherland, France and Belgium were assaulted by the Luftwaffe. This video show the B-25 taxying in the snow in Melsbroek, the crews, scenes of Bodenplate and wrecks of Luftwaffe fighter after the battle. Although some scene of Bodenplatte are “replayed” for the camera, this is an important document about the role of the Mitchells in the liberation of Europe.

Messerschmitts crash into the snow; a German pilot bails out; one is shot down over a town; another crash-lands near a tramway. Shots of wrecked aircraft and dead pilots. Dispersals 08/2011 : 2nd Tactical Air Force Medium Bombers Association Newsletter

Many years ago, when our “Belgian B-25” saga started we joined the 2nd Tactical Air Force Medium Bombers Association, an organisation who grouped veterans of the B-25 crews of the RAF, their families and individuals interested in this subject. At this time the association published on paper a modest but already interesting newsletters : Dispersals. Many veteran associations are confronted with their members fading away for their last flight. In my opinion Dispersals succeed in keeping the link and the spirit alive. Coming from a modest 8 pages, the newsletters is now solid digital publication of more than 30 pages. Maybe more important Dispersals perpetuates the international aspect of the 2nd Tactical Air Force Medium Bombers Association.

We are proud to help and support this initiative.
