Brussels Airport genoemd als nieuwe uitvalsbasis Aer Lingus

Brussels Airport wordt mogelijk een nieuwe uitvalsbasis voor de Ierse luchtvaartmaatschappij Aer Lingus. Dat heeft de Ierse lowcostmaatschappij Ryanair, dat Aer Lingus wil overnemen, laten verstaan. De budgetmaatschappij moet de Europese mededingingsautoriteiten ervan overtuigen dat de fusie geen dominantie zou creëren op de Ierse markt. Ryanair zou naar eigen zeggen bij een geslaagde overname ook een nieuwe thuisbasis voor Aer Lingus buiten Ierland willen creëren. Brussels Airport zou daarbij een optie zijn. Op dit ogenblik vliegt Aer Lingus vanuit Brussel enkel naar Ierse bestemmingen, maar daar zouden ook routes naar diverse Europese hoofdsteden kunnen bijkomen. Aer Lingus zou daarbij op het gebied van prijs de concurrentie aangaan met maatschappijen Brussels Airlines en Easyjet. Ryanair heeft al een belang van 30 procent in Aer Lingus en probeert al jaren zijn Ierse concurrent helemaal in te lijven. Een eerdere overnamepoging werd vijf jaar geleden door de Europese Commissie geblokkeerd. (MH)  Source: Express.be

A very nice Museum located in the south of France, between Arcachon and Biarritz.

One upon a time the base of Latecoère and Luftwaffe seaplane, this seabase is now the house of a small but very interesting museum dedicated to seaplane. I really appreciated the friendly welcome of the visitors. If there are not so much aircraft on display, the various exhibits on show are well presented and this is a place where you learn something. The aircraft of the collection are in modern hangar and such rare aircraft (at least here in Europe) as a Grumman Widgeon or a CAMS replica are on view. Run by volunteers, they succeed in getting support from the local authorities and the Le Bourget Museum. Really a place to visit as well as an example to follow.

TUI Travel Leases Embraer 190s for Belgium’s Jetairfly

TUI Travel PLC, one of the world’s leading leisure-travel groups, is joining the ranks of operators of the Embraer E-Jets family.

The group will lease two Embraer 190 jets from BOC Aviation, a Singapore-based aircraft leasing company. The two Embraer 190s will be delivered in the first half of 2013 to Jetairfly, TUI’s subsidiary airline in Belgium.

Jetairfly’s Embraer 190 jets will be configured with 112 slimline seats in a single-class layout.  According to Embraer, the E-Jets will allow the airline to provide capacity more economically on lower-demand routes that it currently serves with larger narrowbody aircraft.

The Embraer 190s are also intended to be deployed in some Jetairfly winter markets where seasonal demand is better satisfied with 100-seat aircraft, says Embraer. Source: Airlines and destinations

Tijdens de eerste winternacht (21 december) van 1942 vlogen de bommenwerpers van Bomber Command richting München. Omstreeks 23u30 ving de Freya-radar langs de kust de eerste berichten op van de aankomende formatie. Van op St.-Truiden werden 5 toestellen op goed geluk ingezet. Ook van op Laon-Athies startten de Messerschmitts van de 1.NJG 4 de motoren en verspreidden zich doorheen het Vlaamse luchtruim. Eén van de indringers was de Lancaster met rompcode DX-P,een toestel van het 57 Squadron, die nacht opgestegen in Scampton (Engeland).

Warbird : The Mossie has flow

The Mosquito being rebuild at Ardmore New Zealand by AvSpecs had it's first flight today! It took off from Ardmore at about 11am and flew to Auckland International Airport where it was checked over and a small issue with the airspeed indicator was rectified. This video is the second flight that departed Auckland International (NZAA) at about 3:25pm with Keith Skilling at the controls.

Chères opérations de maintien de la paix

Les opérations de maintien de la paix mises sur pied par l'ONU dans les points chauds du globe n'émargent pas au budget ordinaire de l'organisation, mais à un budget à part. Cependant, la quote-part de chaque Etat membre est calculée selon la même clé de répartition que pour le budget ordinaire.
Or, si le budget annuel de l'ONU 2012-2013 est de 2,5 milliards de dollars, celui consacré aux missions de la paix cette année est de 6,9 milliards de dollars. Quinze missions de maintien de la paix sont actuellement financées, et la quote-part payée en 2012 par la Belgique est de 75,13 millions de dollars. Le montant total dépend du nombre d'opérations en cours : en 2004, la part belge ne s'élevait qu'à 45 millions, mais en 2010, c'était 80 millions.
Le G 77 (pays émergents et en développement), qui est le principal pourvoyeur de casques bleus, aimerait que ce personnel militaire soit mieux rétribué : actuellement, l'ONU verse une prime de 1.028 dollars par homme et par mois, mais le débat est permanent entre ceux qui financent les opérations et ceux qui envoient des troupes…
La Belgique envoie un peu de troupes sur le terrain, et donc touche les primes de l'ONU. Est-ce financièrement intéressant ?
Ça dépend : la Belgique participe à la Monusco (RD Congo) avec une vingtaine d'hommes et un avion, pour lequel l'ONU paie une compensation. Sur cette mission, la Belgique, une fois déduits les frais fixes (solde habituelle des militaires, frais fixes pour l'avion) fait un léger bénéfice : 483.000 euros.
Par contre, pour la mission au Liban (Finul), où une centaine de démineurs sont déployés, la participation belge, outre les frais fixes, coûte 6,18 millions d'euros à l'Etat. Les militaires en mission touchent en effet une prime de risque qui grimpe selon le danger : au niveau 5, le plus élevé, le salaire du militaire belge est doublé.
Grosse louche
Mais pour des militaires de pays en développement, l'avantage est proportionnellement plus attrayant. « J'ai été déployé à Kisangani avec un contingent marocain, raconte un militaire belge. Ils étaient tous vieux : c'était leur cadeau avant la retraite ! »
Si l'on additionne le budget ONU et celui des opérations de maintien de la paix, on obtient, grosso modo, 10 milliards de dollars. Les 27 pays membre de l'Union européenne contribuent pour 38 % à cette somme. S'ils gagnent le bras de fer qui va s'engager avec le G77, ils peuvent espérer une réduction de leur part de 3 %, soit 300 millions, à diviser en 27 parts inégales. Cela vaut-il vraiment la peine de se fâcher avec la Chine, la Russie ou le Brésil pour si peu ?

Good Lord..probably one of the most beautiful aircraft ever made...and the
fastest and most successful wooden airplane ever built.

I was lucky enough to be at Breckenridge TX the year Kermit Weeks brought
his to the airshow..

Flight is not long off...

KA114 runs its engines and heads off for its first taxi run. Towards the end of the video each engine was run up to 2700 rpm with 6" of manifold pressure. Amazing sights and sounds. The aircraft is not very far away from stretching its wings for the first time.

J'étais donc avec la presse hier vendredi à Los Angeles Airport pour photographier le dernier attérro de la dernière navette. 

Rita était à la maison, espérant voir le 747/Navette de loin puisqu'un passage était prévu au dessus de Disneyland etc...

 Le plan de vol accordé par la FAA était très souple et modifié de quart d'heure en quart d'heure. Ont donc été ajoutés au plan initial un passage au-dessus du Queen Mary à Long Beach et au dessus du battle ship IOWA récemment offert à la ville de San Pedro (où nous habitons) et où il est définitivement ancré depuis deux mois.

Rita ne connaissait pas évidemment les détails de plan de vol. Le 747/navette et ses deux F-18 en formation sont donc passés au-dessus de l'Iowa dans le port de San Pedro. L'altitude se situait 500 pieds au dessus des plus grandes grues du port... Puis il a fallu mettre de la puissance pour remonter la colline qui mène à Palos Verdes.

 Notre maison éant sur ce trajet Rita, qui scrutait le paysage depuis la terrasse, à tout à coup vu arriver cet extraordinaire formation et a perdu tous ses moyens... Elle a raté ses photos tellement elle tremblait d'émotion (pas de peur) car elle avait, pile à 500 pieds au-dessus de la maison,son avion préféré, le 747. Cet équipage ( 747 + Shuttle + deux F-18 ) était tellement bas que le palmier ne le cachait pas !
Bref, une journée extraordinaire !
 Pour se faire pardonner d'avoir raté les photos elle a ensuite photographié l'écran de la télé !
Mais m'a-t-elle avoué: "J'avais un spectacle inoubliable devant les yeux. Je ne voulais pas le voir à travers le petit viseur de l'appareil ! Je voulais m'en imprégner de visu, je voulais garder cette inimaginable image gravée pour toujours dans ma mémoire. Alors, les photos... Tant pis !"

Et elle a bien eu raison et je suis très content qu'elle ait vécu cette unique expérience !
