Boeing B707 Is 60 Yrs Old

Forwarded message - From: Louis Nève

Thx Louis for sharing

Boeing 707 is 60
Franklin Roosevelt called Dec 7, 1941 - a Day of Infamy.
July 15, 1954, was a Day of  Monumental Change.  Aviation change, that is.  World change.  Today is the Anniversary of that event - an event that changed the course of commercial aviation, the world, and certainly of the Boeing Airplane Company.

It is the 60th Anniversary of the First Flight of the 707 Prototype - the
Dash 80.  The product of a bunch of engineers who probably lived in Bellevue, Washington, wore wing-tipped shoes with argyle socks , white shirts with pocket protectors, and carried K & E slipsticks (slide rules.)  They produced a machine that - on a dozen levels - changed the world.

Sunday, 23 August 1914: drizzling rain in the morning, cleared later but low clouds stayed in the afternoon.
Whilst II Esc.HF was at Saint-Gerard, the German assault brought them 200 m from the airfield, so the unit was again on the run. Four men of their flying personnel were reported missing in the evening: Lieutenants F.Jacquet, J.Jaumotte, & L.Bussy & Sgt E.Demuyter. In the evening the unit was at Philippeville with three aircraft. Lieutenant Soumoy went to France in order to get better aircraft & trying to find a new airfield for his unit, passed over his command temporarily to Lieutenant Isserentant.
Barely arrived at Philippeville, the French army instructed the ill-fated unit further away, as the Germans were now advancing from Charleroi. It was then that the decision was made to try to get to Antwerp through Maubeuge & the coast, an operation which proved unrealisable in the end. Lieutenant Daumerie had his Nazaret car changed into an armored car, & driven by Prince Joseph de Caraman, they went to Haybes to assist French
troops guarding a passage over the Meuse. With their Hotchkiss machine-gun they successfully stopped the Germans from trying to cross the river during the night. On the morning of the 25th, they finally went back to their unit as their ammunition was now all spent.
Reconnaissance missions: 3
• Lt J.Jaumotte-L.Bussy, II Esc.HF – engaged by ground fire.
Escaped skimming the treetops & hedge-hopping away.
• Lt F.Isserentant-S/Lt P.Hiernaux, II Esc.HF – crashed on take off, Farman destroyed, crew slightly.injured.

24 August 1914: IIme Escadrille HF was obliged to withdraw to Petit-Chapelle, close to Chimay and home town of Fernand Jacquet. On the 24th, the unit was reported 'missing in action'.
Lieutenant Adhémar Tapproge, still hospitalised after his crash on August 6th, was made prisoner when the Germans took over Namur.
Reconnaissance missions: 5
• Lts R.Dhanis-E.Bronne, III Esc.HF, 1636-1810 – hit by six bullets between Waelhem & Grimbergen.
• Lts J.Soumoy-F.Petit, II Esc.HF – forced to land at Chimay.
These reconnaissances unveiled the German advance in the south
west of Belgium.

BAPA.BE : A B-25 back to Belgium : Wright 2600 engines delivered in Gembloux

We did it again, the engines have been delivered to the BAPA Workshop !

Dear Friend,
We succeeded (one more time)!
On Thursday, August 7th, both Wright engines for the project " A B-25 back to Belgium " arrived in the workshop of the Belgian Aviation Preservation Association ( BAPA) at Gembloux.
It was only possible thanks to the wonderful support of generous sponsors, the BAMF and the volunteers of the BAPA. We thank them all.
Small step backward. At the end of May, one of our numerous foreign correspondents indicated us the existence of both engines in Ireland. He went in Eire and negotiated a price far below our craziest expectations. The purchase of these engines should  have been 6 times more expensive in the USA.

Immediately, a small team of the BAMF and the BAPA volunteers started the quest  of the needed money.  A appeal to donations was launched mid June and was echoed by numerous friends and enthusiasts. It was very quickly a success upper to our expectations.

Once the budget reached, it was necessary to organize the payment and the transport. The seller received other offers. It was thus necessary to act fast and with a lot of discretion. This is why we observed a total blackout since in the middle of July. We had some cold sweat but after some " brain and emails  storms " (one of our specialties) but  the engines arrived safe and sound.
Thanks to a mixture to the long experience and  the art  of improvisation of the members of the BAPA and the BAMF.

This success was possible only thanks to our generous donors and to others who helped us to prepare the communication for the collection of funds(collections).  Let us not forget those who widely echoed our appeal.  Last but not least, thanks  to the volunteers of the BAMF and the BAPA who one more time demonstrated their passion and full commitment for the conservation of our aeronautical heritage.

Before the end of September, we shall organize an event for our supporters to show the engines and our other achievements of 2014.

Thank you again and go ahead for new adventures.
